On February 12 is the birthday of

Basil Ede, English wildlife artist born in 1931 in Surrey, specialising in avian portraiture, noted for the ornithological precision of his paintings.
Ede's interest in drawing began early in life. As a schoolboy growing up during the Second World War, he filled his exercise books with sketches of military aircraft and unflattering caricatures of his school teachers. He was educated at St John's School, Leatherhead. He later attended Kingston School of Art in Surrey. However, in 1949, he was called up for compulsory military service in the British Army. On leaving the army in 1951, Ede joined the Merchant Navy, taking a job as a purser on board the Orient Line ship Empire Orwell.

The ship's established route was between Southampton and Japan, via Suez, Columbo, Hong Kong, Singapore and Pusan.  In addition to these duties, the ship was at this time deployed to help transport British troops and equipment to and from the Korean War. Ede was to become fascinated by the Far East and in particular by its art. This was undoubtedly to have an influence on his later work. Coming ashore for good, Ede then joined the Cunard line as a young executive. He would spend his spare time painting birds, including designs that he sold to his employers, Cunard, for their first class menu cards on the RMS Queen Elizabeth and RMS Queen Mary.
The first one-man exhibition of Basil Ede's work was held at the Rowland Ward Gallery in London in 1958. In 1964, Ede became the first living artist to be honoured with a one-man show at the National Collection of Fine Arts, Washington D.C. The event was sponsored by the British Embassy, the English Speaking Union and the National Audubon Society.
In 1965, Ede's first book, "Birds of Town and Village" was published by Country Life Books, featuring thirty six plates of his work in full colour. The publication features a foreword written by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and text by ornithologist W. D. Campbell, republished by Chartwell Books in 2004.

In 1971, a chance encounter with another American collector, Jack Warner, led to the commissioning of "The Wild Birds of America" series. Described as a "very ambitious project", the commission was to paint every species of wild bird in North America, 650 in all, in life size. Robert McCracken Peck, in his essay "Four Centuries of Avian Portraiture", says that the project "...has been compared in scope to John James Audubon's twenty eight year effort to document and celebrate the birds of North America", but adds, "so limited a comparison fails to put into proper perspective the much larger tradition of bird painting in America with which both Audubon and Ede are intimately interlinked." The project was cut short in 1989, after Ede suffered a severe stroke. However, a total of ninety five life sized portraits of North American birds, in watercolour, were completed for the collection by Ede, between 1975 and 1989.
Ede was left with his right arm paralysed and taught himself to paint with his left hand instead. He switched his chosen medium from watercolour to oils. Within a year he was once again painting competently and within three he was able to paint in considerable detail.
He died in 2016.

On February 13 is the birthday of

Georg Schrimpf, German painter and graphic artist born in 1889 in Munich.
Along with Otto Dix, George Grosz and Christian Schad, Schrimpf is broadly acknowledged as a main representative of the art trend Neue Sachlichkeit (usually translated New Objectivity), which developed, in Weimar Germany, in the 1920s as a counter-movement to Expressionism and Abstraction. Schrimpf was listed as a producer of Degenerate Art by the German National Socialist government in the 1930s.
From 1905 to 1914 Schrimpf wandered through Belgium, France, Switzerland and Northern Italy, working as a waiter, baker, and coal shuffler.
With the outbreak of the First World War, the antimilitaristic Schrimpf "successfully employed every possible trick to avoid military service; in so doing, however, he ruined his health". From 1915–1918 Schrimpf lived in Berlin, where he worked as a freelance artist. In his free time he used every minute for drawing, painting, and wood carving. Mostly self-taught as an artist, he learned by copying the Old Masters.
In 1916 the famous publicist and art expert Herwarth Walden exhibited some of Schrimpf's paintings and woodcarvings in his Berlin gallery Der Stumm where they received much public attention.

He participated with the November Group and was included in their exhibitions of 1919, 1920, 1924 and 1929. Schrimpf published works, in such the Munich expressionist magazines as Der Weg, Die Bücherkiste and Die Sichel. In 1919 he was involved in the short-lived Munich Soviet Republic which attempted to establish a socialist state in Bavaria and was arrested after the movement was crushed. In 1921 his works were shown in Munich by art dealer Hans Goltz.
As early as the 1920s, Schrimpf was regarded as being a representative of the "right wing" of the Neue Sachlichkeit movement. Other prominent representatives of the wing included Alexander Kanoldt and Franz Lenk. The movement's so called "verist" wing included such artists as Otto Dix, George Grosz and Georg Scholz. In 1924 he moved to Italy.
In 1925 Schrimpf participated in the Neue Sachlichkeit exhibition at the Mannheim Kunsthalle. Two years later, he began teaching at the Meisterschule für Dekorationskunst in Munich. The "right-wing" of the movement were not immediately condemned by the Nazi regime at an early stage and were able to take on professorships in painting after the regime seized power in 1933. Schrimpf's work was seen as an acceptable form of German Romanticism by the authorities.
1932 saw the foundation of the Group Seven and the start of a touring exhibition by the group; the other members were Theo Champion, Adolf Dietrich, Hasso von Hugo, Franz Radziwill, as well as Kanoldt and Lenk.
Schrimpf became professor at the Royal School of Art in Berlin in 1933, but was fired in 1937 because of his “red past”. He had been a short-time member of Rote Hilfe, a socialist organization. For the same reason the Nazi regime banned his works from public exhibitions.
He died in 1938.

On February 14 is the birthday of

Maximilian Emanuel Ainmiller, German artist and glass painter born in 1807.
Under the tutorage of Friedrich von Gärtner, director of the royal Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory, Ainmiller studied glass painting, both as a mechanical process and as an art, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1828 he was appointed director of the newly founded royal painted-glass manufactory at Munich. The method which he gradually perfected there was a development of the enamel process adopted in the Renaissance, and consisted in actually painting the design upon the glass, which was subjected, as each colour was laid on, to carefully adjusted heating.

The earliest specimens of Ainmiller's work are to be found in the cathedral of Regensburg. With a few exceptions, all the windows in Glasgow cathedral are from his hand. Specimens may also be seen in St Paul's cathedral and Peterhouse, Cambridge, and the Cologne cathedral contains some of his finest productions. Ainmiller had considerable skill as an oil-painter, especially in interiors, his pictures of the Chapel Royal at Windsor Castle and of Westminster Abbey being much admired, the latter of which is displayed in the gallery of the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
Maximilian was also mentor to many famous painters, including future son-in-law David Dalhoff Neal, and grandfather to dramatist Max Neal, and composer Heinrich Neal who was born a few month prior to his death in 1870.

On February 15 is the birthday of

Mary Swanzy, Irish landscape and genre painter born in 1882 in Dublin. Noted for her eclectic style, she painted in many styles including cubism, fauvism, and orphism, and was one of Ireland's first abstract painters.
Swanzy attended Alexandra College, Earlsfort Terrace, a finishing school at the Lycée in Versailles, France, and a day school in Freiburg, Germany. This education meant that Swanzy was fluent in French and German. She went on to take art classes at May Mannings's studio, under the direction of John Butler Yeats. Manning encouraged Swanzy to study modelling with John Hughes at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. Living within walking distance of the National Gallery of Ireland, she spent a lot of time studying and copying the great masters. Swanzy's first exhibition was with the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in 1905 with Portrait of a child, continuing to exhibit portraits every year until 1910. In 1905 she went to Paris, and worked at the Delacluse studio. She went on to attend the studio of Antonio de La Gándara in 1906, and took classes at Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Académie Colarossi. Whilst in Paris Swanzy was exposed to the works of Gauguin, Matisse, and Picasso, which made a lasting impression on her.
On her return to Dublin, Swanzy painted portraits and genre scenes and held her first show at Mill's Hall, Merrion Row in 1913.

After the deaths of her parents, Swanzy was financially independent and could travel, spending her time between Dublin and Saint-Tropez during World War I whilst continuing to paint. She also exhibited with the Société des Artistes Indépendants in 1914 and 1916, being elected to the committee in 1920.
Swanzy began to travel to more exotic countries from the 1920s, Honolulu around 1923, and later Samoa. As a result, she painted local tropical flowers, trees, and native women, with a palette and style similar to that of Fauvism. She stayed for a time in Santa Barbara, California, working in a local studio and exhibiting some of her Samoan work at the Santa Barbara Arts Club Gallery. She returned to Ireland in February 1925. In the mid 1920s Swanzy settled in Blackheath, London, making regular trips to Dublin and abroad. At this time Swanzy's painting was influenced by orphism and was reviewed positively. Her work became more allegorical in later years.
She continued to paint until her death at her home in London in 1978.

El 16 de Febrero es el cumple de

Théodore Jacques Ralli o Theodorus Rallis (nombre completo: Theodoros Rallis-Scaramanga, Θεόδωρος Ράλλης), pintor, acuarelista y dibujante griego nacido en 1852 en Constantinopla.

"Escuchando a escondidas / Eavesdropping"

On February 16 is the birthday of

Théodore Jacques Ralli or Theodorus Rallis (full name: Theodoros Rallis-Scaramanga; Greek: Θεόδωρος Ράλλης), Greek painter, watercolourist and draughtsman born in 1852 in Constantinople. He spent most of his working life in Paris, France and in Egypt. He painted genre works, portraits, local figures, architectural subjects, interiors with figures and animals. But he is best known for his orientalist paintings.
He was sent to Paris under the patronage of King Otto of Greece and studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme, French painter and professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and under Jean-Jules-Antoine Lecomte du Nouy, both known for their orientalist paintings.
Ralli then travelled widely in North Africa and the Middle East, settling for a while in Cairo, Egypt. Here he found his inspiration for the romantic mysticism and suggestive sensuality of his many orientalistic paintings. His other genre paintings were often nostalgic recollections of the life and customs of his Greek homeland, which he portrayed with a delicate and moving reverence. His paintings were elaborated with great attention to detail, with great attention to costumes and facial expressions. The varying light sources in his paintings such as rays of light, candles, or the glowing embers in the fireplace are rendered in soft colours.

Rallis first exhibition was at the Salon in 1875. From 1879 he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français, where he received an honourable mention in 1885, and a silver medal in 1889 for his whole work He exhibited his paintings in the Salon de Rouen (1897, 1903, 1906 and 1909) and also in Athens during the Olympic Games of 1896. He also served as a member of the competition jury in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle. In 1901 he became a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur.
After his death in 1909, he was slowly almost forgotten. It is telling that his name is not even included in the Grove Dictionary of Art. Most of his paintings are still in private collections. Only a few museums ever purchased his works. Lately, his paintings have been rediscovered and are being auctioned at prices that are a tenfold of some years ago, fetching prices from 30,000 to 100,000 euros.

He employs a variety of supports for his work, including oil painting, and mural painting.
As a child, his mother notices his passion for drawing and colorimetry and encourages him to pursue this area. As an adolescent, he starts to visit the atelier of Sohail Alahdab, where he learns various pictorial techniques and clay modeling. After graduating from school, he moves to Damascus to pursue studies at the school of Fine Arts. As a student, he starts to sell immediately his paintings to pay his costs. In 1998, he obtains his diploma in painting, in 2000 obtaining his Master's degree.
The Damascus gallery Naseer Shura receives the first three exhibitions of Khaled al-Khani, in 1999, 2000 and 2001. The dominant colour in these series is brown, and the esthetic employs effects of contre-jour. His presentation to the Arab artistic scene begins in Kuwait, where he presents his first exhibition at the Museum of Baytlothan in 2001, followed by another exhibition the following year at the Boushahri Gallery. Individual exhibitions take place in Dubai, Jordan and Lebanon.

"Amor de manifestante / Demonstrator Love"
Acrílico sobre lienzo / acrylic on canvas, 50 × 50 cm., 2017. Artsy

Three months following the popular upheaval, Khaled al-Khani is forced to escape his country. He is wanted for his part in popular demonstrations in Damas against the President Bachar el-Assad and for having published a series of articles denouncing the 1982 massacre at Hama, for many years a taboo subject in the history of Syria. He arrives in Paris in June 2011, where he waits for one year before taking up his work again. Horrified by the violence unleashed in his country, very violent imagery emerges in his painting, depicting deformed figures, disfigured faces, and the agitated masses.
The human as an individual or in the crowd is at the heart of the work of Al-Khani. Woman are also an important subject in his paintings.
In Khaled al-Khani's work, we find a development similar to the works of many artists of the German Expressionist movement beginning before the period of the First World War, such as Otto Dix.

On February 18 is the birthday of

Louis Comfort Tiffany, American artist and designer born in New York City in 1848, who worked in the decorative arts and is best known for his work in stained glass.
He is the American artist most associated with the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements. He was affiliated with a prestigious collaborative of designers known as the Associated Artists, which included Lockwood de Forest, Candace Wheeler, and Samuel Colman. Tiffany designed stained glass windows and lamps, glass mosaics, blown glass, ceramics, jewelry, enamels, and metalwork. He was the first Design Director at his family company, Tiffany & Co., founded by his father Charles Lewis Tiffany.
Tiffany started out as a painter, but became interested in glassmaking from about 1875 and worked at several glasshouses in Brooklyn between then and 1878.

In the beginning of his career, Tiffany used cheap jelly jars and bottles because they had the mineral impurities that finer glass lacked. When he was unable to convince fine glassmakers to leave the impurities in, he began making his own glass. Tiffany used opalescent glass in a variety of colors and textures to create a unique style of stained glass.
He trademarked Favrile (from the old French word for handmade) on November 13, 1894. He later used this word to apply to all of his glass, enamel and pottery. Tiffany's first commercially produced lamps date from around 1895.
Tiffany interiors also made considerable use of mosaics. The mosaics workshop, largely staffed by women, was overseen until 1898 by the Swiss-born sculptor and designer Jacob Adolphus Holzer.
He died in 1933.
