This portrait was made at Delmore Station in 1994. I spent the whole day with Emily and other women artists, talking and taking photographs. It was only at the end of the day that this magic moment occurred, Emily turned her head in perfect profile to where I was sitting, listening to something in the distance.

"La burbuja / The Bubble", publicada en / published in Camera Work, 1909. ADT

"Drew Barrymore", Harper's Bazaar, Mar., 2016

"Willow Smith como / as Kali", Harper's Bazaar, Sept., 2015

"Farida, La agonía de / The Agony of Marguerite Gautier", 1992

The Red List

"Mardi Gras", 1946. The Red List

Untitled (Cobblestoned Stockholm street by night)", 1950. Eduard Planting Gallery

On December 1 is the birthday of

Jerry Burchard, American photographer born in 1931 and raised in Rochester, Upstate New York.
By the age of 16 Jerry was a third generation Kodak worker (the largest employer in the area.)
He joined the Navy (1952-56) and served as a photographer in Europe.
After the Navy, at the suggestion of Minor White, Jerry attended (and received a BFA in 1960) at the California School of Fine Arts.
Jerry started teaching in 1966, and was chairman of the photo department from 1968 to 1971 at the school what is now called the San Francisco Art Institute.
During the 1950's Jerry was doing portraits of the San Francisco North Beach artists, after wanting originally to photograph jazz musicians, but finding that most of them had died.
In the 70's Jerry would teach for a while at SFAI, and then go live for months at a time in exotic places around the world to hang out, to be there, and to take photos.
Casablanca, Goulimine, Madrid, Ping Yuen, Bangkok, Burma, and other locations were all well suited for Jerry's night walks with his camera, capturing the ambiance, the feel of being there. His favorite place becoming Bangkok, Thailand.
“My camera is my friend. We go for walks together, sometimes late at night. Sometimes we meet people or landscapes and we make love to them. Sometimes the camera gets more than I do. Sometimes the other way. In any case, the camera, a wizened 1957 SP Nikon, sees what I don’t, what I can’t, what I’d like to. That’s why we’re friends.”. J.B.
He died in 2011.

On December 2 is the birthday of

Greg Weight, Australian photographer born in 1946 in Sydney, specialising in fine art photography and portraiture.
He opened his own studio in 1968, taking advertising and magazine photographs and working with the Australian Opera and the Australian Ballet. In 1970 he was invited to work in the consciously creative venue the Yellow House with Martin Sharp, Brett Whiteley, George Gittoes and Peter Kinsgton, photographing its artists, installations and activities and there mounting his first exhibition, a series of photographs of the Cronulla sand dunes.
Over the next three decades he photographed artists and their works for catalogues and books, assembling the collection of portraits of artists published as Australian Artists: Portraits by Greg Weight in 2004. Weight won the inaugural Australian Photographic Portrait Prize in 2003 for a photograph of Jim Conway, and the Head On photographic portrait prize for this photograph of Shen in 2006. His photographs are held in the collections of the National Library, the NGA and state and regional galleries. The National Portrait Gallery acquired 101 of his photographs by gift of Patrick Corrigan in 2004.

On December 3 is the birthday of

Anne Wardrope (Nott) Brigman, American photographer born in 1869 in the Nu‘uanu Pali above Honolulu, Hawaii, and one of the original members of the Photo-Secession movement in America. Her most famous images were taken between 1900 and 1920, and depict nude women in primordial, naturalistic contexts.
In 1894 she married a sea captain, Martin Brigman. She accompanied her husband on several voyages to the South Seas, returning to Hawaii at least once. By 1900 Brigman stopped traveling with her husband and resided in Oakland, California.
She was active in the growing bohemian community of the San Francisco Bay Area. She began photographing in 1901. Soon she was exhibiting and within two years she had developed a reputation as a master of pictorial photography. The first public display of her work came in June 1902 with other members of the California Camera Club at San Francisco's Second Photographic Salon in the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art.
Brigman quickly gained recognition outside of California. In late 1902, she came across a copy of Camera Work and was captivated by the images and the writings of Alfred Stieglitz. She wrote Stieglitz praising him for the journal, and Stieglitz in turn soon became captivated with Brigman's photography. In 1903 she was listed as an Associate of his famous Photo-Secession. In 1908 she became a Fellow of the Photo-Secession. Because of Stieglitz's notoriously high standards and because of her distance from the other members in New York, this recognition is a significant indicator of her artistic status. She was the only photographer west of the Mississippi to be so honored.
In California, she became revered by West Coast photographers, and her photography influenced many of her contemporaries. Between 1908 and the mid-1920s Brigman frequently vacationed in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, where she exhibited her photos at several of the seaside salons. In 1929 she moved to Long Beach, California where she lived alone in a number of apartments near the ocean. She found inspiration along the picturesque shorelines of the Pacific and held a major solo exhibition at the Bothwell and Cooke Galleries in January 1936.
Declining vision led her to abandon professional freelance photography in 1930 although she continued photography through the 1940s.
She died in 1950.

On December 4 is the birthday of

Ann Tenno (née Ann Epler), Estonian photographer and photo artist, born in 1952 in Tartu.
She is noted in particular for her town landscapes, especially photographs of the Estonian capital of Tallinn, and the churches and manor houses of Estonia.
In 1971 she graduated from Tartu 5 high school. In 1976 she graduated in Algebra from the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Tartu. She then worked in the field of mathematics in the Economic Department of the University of Tartu and Department of Mathematics of the Tallinn University of Technology until 1984, when she began working at the Design Institute of Cultural Monuments as a photographer.
Tenno has worked as a freelance photographer, and her images have been compiled and published in numerous books of other authors. Her photo exhibitions were mainly in the 1980s, and she has since published numerous photographic books which have been warmly received by critics. In 1998 she published a book of photographs of the Estonian capital of Tallinn, and in 2002 she published another one on the churches of Estonia. She is also the co-author with Juhan Maiste of Manor Houses of Estonia. This book received considerable acclaim and was cited by City paper: the Baltic States as "the most beautiful book on Estonian manors". The Baltic Review cited her as a "well known" photographer of Estonia whose works provide "a genuine depiction of life in contemporary Estonia."

On December 6 is the birthday of

Adam Franciszek Mikołaj Dulęba, Polish photographer born in 1895 in Żywiec, officer of the Polish Legions, soldier of Armia Krajowa; known under the pseudonym Góral.
Adam Dulęba was the photographer and chronicler of the Polish Legions. He photographed, among others, Józef Piłsudski and Edward Rydz-Śmigły. He was awarded the Cross of Independence on 5 August 1937.
During his service in the Polish Legions Dulęba worked at the press office of the Legions' headquarters. He photographed and documented everyday life of the soldiers stationed there. Dulęba's pictures had preserved not only military marches, but also battle preparations and the battles themselves, everyday activities of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, patriotic manifestations and funerals of soldiers of the First Brigade. His photographs had immortalized the following figures: Edward Rydz-Śmigły, Kazimierz Sosnkowski, Józef Haller, Władysław Sikorski together with aforementioned Józef Piłsudski. In 1916, part of those photographs had already been printed in a limited edition photo album called "Legionowo", which was self-published by Adam Dulęba.
In 1944 Adam Dulęba was captured and taken by the Germans to the Gross-Rosen concentration camp. End of March 1944, sixty-two prisoners of the Gross-Rosen concentration camp were transported to the nearby Schutzstaffel headquarters. In the so-called "wełecki forest" they were brutally executed. It is believed that Adam Dulęba was among those prisoners murdered there.
All of the valuables belonging to the Dulęba family were stolen and taken deep into German territory.

On December 7 is the birthday of

Filip Naudts, photographer and photography reviewer born in 1968, based in Belgium.
In 1992, Filip Naudts began his career working for the Belgian national television and press. The following year, he was employed by the Antwerp Fotomuseum, where he remained until 2002. From 2002 to 2006, he became photo editor of the Dutch photo magazine Foto. And after that he started his career as a full-time freelance photographer. In 1993, he also founded his own photo studio Guarda La Fotografia in Lochristi, where he quickly developed his own poetic style, often referring to the portrait paintings of The Flemish primitives. In 2000, a landmark moment in his photographic career happened in Prague, as the National Technical Museum (Prague) scheduled a solo exhibition with Naudts' work.
This show resulted in the development and publication of his first book "Auromatic". Arvie Wrang says on Filip Naudts' website that he is probably one of the most compelling, thought-provoking photographing artists of his country. His work gets published weekly in several popular magazines in Belgium and abroad: P-Magazine, Knack, Ché, ...
On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of his studio Guarda La Fotografia in 2013 an eponymous book appeared, in which photographic portraits of Belgian celebrities, female nudity and humor play an important role.
In 2014, in the pituresque city center of Ghent, Filip Naudts founded Studio Guarda La Fotografia, a tourist guesthouse inspired by photography, and wherein some of Naudts' photographic works play a major role.

On December 8 is the birthday of

Jean-Paul Goude, French graphic designer, illustrator, photographer and advertising film director, born in 1940.
He worked as art director at Esquire magazine in New York City during the 1970s, and famously choreographed the 1989 Bicentennial Parade in Paris to mark the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. In addition, over the last three decades, he has created well known campaigns and illustrations for brands including Perrier, Citroën, Kodak, Chanel, Kenzo and Shiseido.
From as early as he can remember, Goude would draw images of aboriginals and black people, and would write stories about the characters he created. For Goude, Aboriginals were his heroes; he would draw them fighting White cowboys, and unsurprisingly, the Aboriginals would always win. Although they were his heroes, Blacks would soon hold a larger place in his heart.
Goude and his mother shared in their fascination with black people. As a ballet dancer, his mother envied the beauty of the Black dancers she worked with, and described to her son the jet-black skin of the chorus girls, as well as the unique ways in which the women would move their bodies.
In 1968, Harold Hayes, editor of Esquire magazine, asked Goude to art direct a special edition of the magazine to celebrate its 75th issue. Several months later, Goude was asked to become the magazine's full-time art editor. Goude worked closely with model-turned-pop-singer Grace Jones, consulting on her image, choreographing her live stage performances, directing her music videos, and creating her album covers. Jean-Paul Goude’s book, Jungle Fever, has been described as an autobiographical exploration of his career. Published in 1983, Jungle Fever includes many of Goude’s photographs and manipulations of Black women, as well as insights to his personal life with his muses, and his beliefs about the Black female form.
Creating post-modern art, Goude is recognized as avant-garde, “constantly [blurring] the boundaries between publicity and high art” in his advertising campaigns. In comparing Goude’s advertisements to his “art pieces”, several distinctions can be made. To begin, advertisements that Goude creates on commission almost never display Black men or women, are often colourful, and are read as humorous and playful. Although there are generally no ethnic models in Goude’s advertisements, female models often wear subtly tribal hairstyles and jewelry. Lastly, Goude rarely manipulates the bodies of models in advertisements. On the other hand, artworks created by Goude take a completely opposite approach, almost exclusively featuring Black models. These images still utilize bright colours, and graphic design, but are often manipulated to emphasize stereotypically sexualized Black body parts, or to give models tribal looking features, which allude to groups in Africa.

On December 9 is the birthday of

Carlotta Corpron, American photographer born in 1901 in Blue Earth, Minnesota, known for her abstract compositions featuring light and reflections, made mostly during the 1940s and 1950s. She is considered a pioneer of American abstract photography and a key figure in Bauhaus-influenced photography in Texas.
Her father, Alexander Corpron, was a doctor, and he moved the family to India, where he served as a medical missionary. After spending there most of her youth, she returned to the United States in 1920 to study art at Michigan State Normal College, where she earned a B.S. in art education in 1925. She went on to study fabric design and art education at Columbia University's Teachers College, gaining her master's degree the following year.
Corpron supported herself as an art teacher. She bought her first camera in 1933. One year later she took a job teaching photography, design, and art history at the Texas Women's University in Denton. Corpron's teaching and "photographic vision" had a large influence on the next generation of photographers who brought techniques to Texas that hadn't been seen before. She retired from teaching in 1968.
Corpron took up black-and-white photography in 1933 and was initially interested in it as tool for taking photographs of natural forms for use in textile design courses. Her highly abstract aesthetic was influenced by the photograms of Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy, who visited Denton in 1942 to teach a light workshop. Around the same time, the artist György Kepes came to Denton to write a book, and he helped expand her repertoire, introducing Corpron to a range of modernist techniques including double exposures and solarization.
Corpron is best known for several series that have been termed "light-poetry" and which she called "Light Drawings" in which she investigated light as a central subject. She made a number of light paintings by tracking the movement of lights at amusement parks, and another group of images centered on distorted reflections of objects like eggs. There is also a series of images, "Light Patterns," made by photographing the play of light on sheets of paper suspended inside a custom-designed box. She also experimented with solarization and with ferrotype plates. er imaginative and "ultramodern" investigations of light broke new ground in photographic technique and established her reputation as a pioneer of American abstract photography and a leader of what one scholar has termed the "Texas Bauhaus."
In the 1950s, Corpron's production fell off due to ill health and straitened finances. However, in 1975, her work was included in the San Francisco Museum of Art's landmark exhibition "Women of Photography: An Historical Survey," which led to a resurgence of interest in her work. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, she was included in exhibitions at a number of museums and galleries, and today her work is held in the collections of MOMA (New York), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Dallas (Texas) Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago), and other art institutions.
She died in 1988.

Today, December 10, is the birthday of

Dirk de Herder, Dutch photographer born in Rotterdam in 1914.
His father, Alle de Herder, was a musician and Dirk grew up in artistic circles. Initially he became a painter, but he quickly realised that photography allowed him to combine his twin passions: for observation and composition. His main contacts in the photographic world were with Brassaï, who was based in Paris but with whom he was nevertheless in direct touch, and with Henri Berssenbrugge in the Netherlands. In addition, he often associated with painters; for some time he was the favourite photographer of the COBRA movement and as a result became closely acquainted with Karel Appel and Corneille. His work also brought him into contact with the VARA broadcasting organisation, where he made portraits of hundreds of performers between 1954 and 1964. Among his subjects were not just local household names the Familie Doorsnee, Pipo de Clown and Dorus (Tom Manders), but also international stars like pianist Arthur Rubinstein.
Light plays a prominent role in De Herder’s ‘photographic dreams’. His subjects were often found close to home: flowers, people, streets and beaches. They feature in his finest photographs: of an open window with a net curtain, shot against the light, and of nocturnal streets gleaming with rain. It is no surprise that he admired art photographers like Brassaï, André Kertész and Man Ray.
Dirk de Herder was sometimes called ‘The last of the northern romantics’. His whole life was a quest for the poetic and aesthetic. In a long series of films, paintings, collages, boxes and books he sought to create his own flawless world. His romanticism influenced all his work – he preferred to have as little as possible to do with the society in which he lived. Inevitably, therefore, his photographs are always in black and white; colour would have been too much like painting and too close to the real world.
He died in 2003.
