"Mantis", 150 x 50 x 70 cm., 2007

"Gran volador / Great Flyer", 500 x 500 cm.

"Elefante indio / Indian Elephant", 38 x 38 x 20 cm., 2007

Izq./ Left. "Pajaro zancudo / Leggy Bird", 100 x 40 x 22 cm., 2004
Der./ Right: "Ciervo africano / African Deer", 19 x 24 x 22 cm., 2004

Izq./ Left: "Insecto negro / Black Insect", 120 x 70 x 22 cm., 1999
My second sculpture. The first one burned in a fire"
Der./ Right: "Insecto / Insect", 70 x 50 x 115 cm., 2000

"Perro sentado / Sitting Dog", 90 x 90 x 35 cm.

No suelo hacer bocetos.

Izq./ Left: "Palomo / Pigeon", 48 x 35 x 16 cm., 2013
Der./ Right: "Pajaro azul y rojo / Red and Blue Bird", 30 x 35 x 23 cm., 2012

Miquel Aparici is an artist born in Barcelona in 1963. His current work revolves around sculptures, generally of animals, made with recycled material, recovered objects, in a minimalist tone, imaginative and ingenious, trying to respect the most the elements, altering them as little as possible during the assembly process. His study in l'Hospitalet is a redoubt full of objects of all kinds that the artist is collecting, and among which he searches to compose his pieces.
Miquel studied graphic design, and is currently artistic director of the magazine Jueves.

«[It all began] with a cup of coffee and a paper. I had just arrived from a trip to Formentera. I had been fascinated by the fauna of the island. Having coffee at the house of my friend the illustrator Lluïsot, I took paper and drew with the coffee and the spoon the lizards I had seen in Formentera. The result enchanted me and I was about four months without stopping drawing insects and animals with coffee and sugar. Later, I contacted a gallery that gave me my first opportunity.»

Der.Arriba / Right Top: "Pajaro rojo / Red Bird", 45 x 30 x 80 cm., 2003
Der.Abajo / Right Bottom: "Bicho bola / Woodlouse", 35 x 30 x 20 cm., 2002

"Saltamontes / Grasshopper", 130 x 80 x 30 cm.

«At one point I felt that it was enough with the drawing of the coffee; it began to bore me. I was aware, above all, that if I stayed in the art world it was to amuse myself. Nor did I want to be stranded or chained to a technique just because people liked it. So I started to draw in the air and, in parallel I started to make the wires, that was my true pretension. Moving from drawing to coffee, which was very linear, to wire, has allowed me to understand that each sculpture is a problem, a challenge and that each one was very different from the previous one, and so I found my way. It is where I feel happier and more comfortable, where I do not get bored and, above all, where I do not repeat myself. That is my main engine. At the same time I discovered that making sculptures of animals allowed me to channel my innate passion for biology. So I can say that I make a kind of synthesis.»

"Guepardo / Cheetah" (obra y detalle / work and detail), 150 x 71 x 20 cm., 2015

The Black Bird was made with an old iron canteen, the head is an agricultural tool and the wings grain pickers.

"Cohetes / Rockets"

«I try to extract beauty from things which people do not necessarily find beautiful. For example, I have drawn a louse that seems beautiful to me, also a jellyfish, an abyssal fish, which are not necessarily beautiful animals. I will never make a butterfly because it is already beautiful in itself. To me, what is beautiful in itself does not interest me, because it is already a thing too beautiful. I find it absurd to try to do something nice when it already is.»

"Cohetes / Rockets"

«I have united two of my passions: biology and ancient objects. I look for old materials and tools and try to combine them in my workshop to create my particular fauna.»

«When I start to make a piece I never know what I'm going to do, but I always get birds, insects, animals ... Sometimes I try to do other things and they look bad, they do not flow naturally, neither do I feel comfortable nor do I enjoy it. Animals come to me spontaneously. I like animals that have wings, antennae or legs, those that have elements that allow the sculpture to be volumetric, is when I feel more comfortable.»

«One piece can trigger the sculpture and the other pieces serve as a filling. The most important thing is usually the head, it is the axis, the soul of the sculpture. It should work like that, and everything else must harmonize with that centerpiece. The other possibility is to know what animal I want to do but, always, without knowing how I am going to do it. So first I have to make the skeleton that serves as a hanger to go placing all the other elements and I can fill that skeleton without knowing how it will end, but knowing that I want to make that animal. For me it's like a game. I do not usually sketch. I imagine my workshop like a child's room, full of pots and I sitting in the middle trying to see how it works. That would be the definition of my creative process, a child playing. It's like a Lego ... »
