Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau [Pintura]

Juzguen ustedes mismos.

Painting battles is for fascists? It is the first question that Perez Reverte launches to Ferrer-Dalmau in a talk, part of which we can see below. The question is relevant, taking into account that today nobody in Spain, except him, paints warlike episodes. Discovering the splendid work "Rocroi", and from there to delve into the work of this singular artist is more than interesting, considering that we live in a country where the wounds opened by a war whose start will be 100 years in less than 20 have not yet closed. In any case, the meticulous investigation and recreation of the battles and other historical episodes, the undeniable artistic quality of his work and the recovery of a pictorial tradition in a matter that gave the art some of his most spectacular and immortal pieces, make of the work of Ferrer-Dalmau something unique. Judge yourselves.

The Battle of San Marcial was a battle fought during the Peninsular War on 31 August 1813. The Spanish Army of Galicia, led by Manuel Freire, turned back Marshal Nicolas Soult's last major offensive against the army of Britain's Marquess of Wellington.

Rocroi

"Rocroi, El último Tercio / The Last Tercio"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 170 x 100 cm., 2011.

The work depicts the last moments of the Battle of Rocroi, fought within the context of the Thirty Years War on May 19, 1643 near Rocroi, in the north of France, in which French troops commanded by the Duke Of Enghien defeated the Spanish imperial army under the command of the Portuguese Francisco de Melo. The painting represents the last surviving Spanish tercio while waiting for the artillery and the French knights who had fled or annihilated the rest of the Spanish army. Wikipedia

«Rocroi's painting has a special meaning for me, because it was born of a conversation with the painter while we ate a lamb with couscous in a restaurant in Madrid. A twilight canvas was the idea, reflecting the loneliness and the sunset, the proud defeat, the undaunted symbolic end of the faithful infantry that for two centuries, from the Catholic Kings to Philip IV, made Europe tremble. The rigorous portrayal of those soldiers driven by hunger, ambition or adventure, who stabbed the world by walking behind the old flags, from the American jungles to the distant shores of the Mediterranean, from the coasts of Ireland and England to the dikes of Flanders and the plains of central Europe: brutal men, cruel, arrogant, mutinous and brutish, disciplined only under fire, who bore everything in any slaughter or siege, but who tolerated no one, not even their king, speaked them loudly.» Arturo Pérez Reverte.

Augusto pintando / painting "Rocroi"

- Under the title of 'The dog of Rocroi', you have dedicated an article to the painting that, over that legendary battle, has painted Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau. What differences do you find between this and Velazquez's 'Surrender of Breda'?
-There is a great difference, and that is that Velázquez's painting is a courtly picture, it is a picture in which a false image of war and peace, of surrender, is being given. That is very well between generals, but in the background, you see the spears and who are holding them are soldiers who have been going through misery for a lot of time in the siege, and those who are then thrown like dogs. It is a false glory, it is a lie, it is a backscratching of generals. On the contrary, the picture of Ferrer-Dalmau is true, that is the war. It is the death, the blood, the mud, the dirt, the solitude, because in fact, that painting paradoxically is a group of people, a closed circle in the most absolute solitude. Abandoned by their King and giving a damn to their country and their compatriots. There is a great feature in that picture of Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau, who is having placed the spears disorderly. Along with the symmetrical harmony of Velázquez's spears, that break, that desperate spear movement, like a hedgehog that retracts itself to sell pricey its skin, I think that is what best symbolizes the moment, Spain, the soldiers and which really was the Battle of Rocroi.

"Augusto tomando notas en Afganistán / taking notes at Afghanistan", 2012

It is the first time that a Spanish painter goes to a mission abroad to collaborate with the Ministry of Defense. However, it is not an exceptional practice in other armies (for example, the US Army Marine Corps currently has three official "war artists" - one of them is Michael Fay, who has embodied in his paintings participation American in Iraq and Afghanistan), just as it was not in the past; Just remember Vasily Vereshchagin (Russian-Turkish War, Russian-Japanese War) or William Simpson (Crimean War, Franco-Prussian War), both privileged witnesses and famous painters of important battles of the 19th century.

He studied at the Jesuit college of San Ignacio de Sarriá. At the end of the 1980s he worked as a textile designer for different companies, always maintaining his passion for oil painting. His vocation for the militia also led him, from a very young age, to paint this subject, although his first independent and self-taught works were landscapes, especially seascapes.
Later, inspired by the work of Antonio López García, he focused on urban environments and captured in his canvases the spots of his native Barcelona. He exhibited in art galleries, and garnered hits and good reviews. The work of this time is collected in a monograph of the author and in several general books of contemporary art. At the end of the 1990s he decided to specialize in the historical-military theme and began to produce canvases where the landscape is mixed with military elements such as soldiers and cavalry.

According to his friend, the writer and member of the Royal Spanish Academy, Arturo Pérez-Reverte:
"Nobody - as far as I know - paints in Spain as Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau. With such honesty and with such admirable absence of complexes in recovering the images of our long military past. What in other countries is natural, painters of battles that fix in their canvases the history and the memory of their respective nations, here it is doubly astonishing because of the unusual of the effort and the splendid beauty of the result. That makes Ferrer-Dalmau and his singular work extraordinary, in something especially rare. And, as such, precious. His paintings are scenes, portraits, necessary keys to illustrate our past. To remember and reflect. To understand better, our miseries, our tragedies and our greatness."

Augusto devotes a lot of time to documenting himself to produce works that faithfully represent the historical moment depicted. He tries to avoid any historical failure because of doing so, he says, "I would receive criticism from all sides, I advise myself with very good people and I write the name of the advisers behind, they help me a lot and their work is as important as mine."
As for the realism of his works, the artist speaks from his experience:
"I have been a soldier, I have been in maneuvers and I know how soldiers feel. When I painted Empel's Miracle, I imagined a mudflat, people fucked and having a bad time. I have lived in this time, in the twentieth century, imagine how that would be centuries ago. The painters of ancient battles did not materialize reality since they were hired by kings. When I see them I say ... Damn, how pretty! No way! It was not like that!"

«I started with a very specific subject that was the landscape theme, especially the urban, following the current of Antonio Lopez, and I did it because I was passionate about his painting, and I think that the first painting most recognized was the Gran Via of Barcelona, who painted imitating a little the style of Antonio López, and since then I went into the world of painting. There was a time when I painted many cemeteries, imitating Urgel, very dark paintings that I liked very much, but then I moved on to the world of military painting where I entered with the Carlist world.»

When asked if his painting is right-wing, his answer is:
«No, it's history of Spain. The history of Spain has neither rights nor lefts. It seems that people who like the army, war movies and this kind of thing are people with whom we have to be careful. I do not like football, I'm sorry, what can I do?... We're known as warmongers, but no, we're not.»

Josep Cusachs i Cusachs was a Spanish soldier and painter born in France in 1851.
He spent most of his life in the area between Barcelona and Mataró. In 1865, he enrolled at the "Academia Militar de Artillería" in Segovia, became a Captain, and fought in the Third Carlist War. He retired with the rank of Commander in 1882 to dedicate himself to art. His army experience was still an important part of his life, however, and his paintings were mostly on military subjects, especially the cavalry, due to his love for horses. He studied locally with Simó Gómez, and in Paris with Édouard Detaille, an expert on military art.
His first exhibition came in 1884 at the Sala Parés, a major art gallery in Barcelona, where he continued to exhibit regularly, with great critical and financial success. Three years later, he participated in an exposition in Madrid, where his painting En el campo de maniobras (Maneuvers in the Field), was purchased by Queen María Cristina. In 1891, he won a gold medal at the International Exposition in Berlin with Maniobras de división (Divisional Maneuvers).
In addition to his military art, he stood out as a portrait painter, with such notable sitters as King Alfonso XIII, General Juan Prim and Mexican President Porfirio Díaz, (on display at the State Art Museum of Veracruz in Orizaba). He also dealt with religious themes, including his well-known La huída a Egipto (The Flight from Egypt), which is in the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey.
He died in 1908.
