On January 1 is the birthday of

César Baldaccini, usually called César, noted French sculptor born in Marseille in 1921.
César was at the forefront of the Nouveau Réalisme movement with his radical compressions (compacted automobiles, discarded metal, or rubbish), expansions (polyurethane foam sculptures), and fantastic representations of animals and insects.
After studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Marseilles (1935-39) he went on to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1943-48). He began making sculptures by welding together pieces of scrap metal in 1952 and first made his reputation with solid welded sculptures of insects, various kinds of animals, nudes, etc.
His first one-man exhibition was at the Galerie Lucien Durand, Paris, 1954.
By 1960 César was considered one of France's leading sculptors. In that year, on a visit to a scrap merchant in search of metal, he saw a hydraulic crushing machine in operation, and decided to experiment with it in his sculpture. He astonished his followers by showing three crushed cars at a Paris exhibition. It was for these 'Compressions' that César became renowned. César selected particular cars for crushing, mixing elements from differently coloured vehicles. In this way he could control the surface pattern and colour scheme of the piece.
In 1965, he started to work with plastics, first with plastic moulds of human imprints, then from 1966 by pouring expanded polyurethane, which was allowed to expand and solidify.
He died in 1998.

On January 2 is the birthday of

Richard Westall, English painter and illustrator of portraits, historical and literary events, born in 1765, best known for his portraits of Byron. He was also Queen Victoria's drawing master.
Westall was the more successful of two half-brothers (both sons of a Benjamin Westall, from Norwich) who both became painters. His younger half-brother was William Westall (1781–1850), a landscape painter.
He began studying at the Royal Academy School of Arts from 10 December 1785. He exhibited at the Academy regularly between 1784 and 1836, became an Associate in November 1792 and was elected an Academician on 10 February 1794.
His works – many in watercolour – caused great interest in the late years of the 18th century when he was considered by his chief patron Richard Payne Knight to be an outstanding artist of the picturesque. He painted works in a neoclassical style for John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery and for Henry Fuseli's Milton Gallery.
He died in 1836.

On January 3 is the birthday of

Émile Nestor Joseph Carlier, French sculptor born in 1849.
He began work carving the stones of the Cambrai cathedral. At one time he fell from a scaffold and was saved only by his bag's strap catching on a pole.
He went to Paris, visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1867, which confirmed his vocation as an artist. Receiving no financial support from his parents, he had to support himself through minor jobs. Then he returned to Cambrai to follow a course of academic study in the workshop of René Fache.
In 1874 he exhibited for the first time at the Salon, and exhibited there in all subsequent years. As a token of gratitude, he donated his first major work to the city of Cambrai. It was the stone statue of Cambrai chronicler Enguerrand de Monstrelet which he created in 1876 and was erected in a public garden.
He exhibited Gilliat struggling with the octopus, which earned him a second prize at the Salon of 1879,[1] and Before the Stone Age, which earned him a scholarship to travel and visit Italy in 1881.
When World War I broke out, he devoted himself assisting refugees from the North, and as President of the friends of Cambrai, he devoted himself during the four years of conflict with his friend Devignes to help people of that town.
He died in 1927.

On January 4 is the birthday of

François Rude, French sculptor born in 1784 in Dijon. He was the stepfather of Paul Cabet, a sculptor.
He worked at his father's trade as a stovemaker till the age of sixteen, but received training in drawing from François Devosges, where he learned that a strong, simple contour was an invaluable ingredient in the plastic arts. In 1809 he went to Paris from the Dijon school of art, and became a pupil of Pierre Cartellier, obtaining the Grand Prix de Rome in 1812. After the second restoration of the Bourbons he retired to Brussels, where, probably owing to the intervention of the exiled Jacques-Louis David he got some work under the architect Charles Vander Straeten, who employed him to execute nine bas-reliefs in the palace of Tervuren, now destroyed.
His great success dates from 1833, when he received the cross of the Legion of Honour for his statue of a Neapolitan Fisher Boy playing with a Tortoise (now in the Louvre), which also procured for him the important commission for all the sculptural frieze ornament and one group on the Arc de Triomphe, in Paris. This group, Départ des volontaires de 1792 (Departure of the Volunteers of 1792), also known as La Marseillaise, a work full of energy and fire, immortalizes the name of Rude.
Among other productions are Napoleon Awakening to Immortality (Musée d'Orsay, Paris), the statue of the mathematician Gaspard Monge (1848), Jeanne d'Arc, in the gardens of the Luxembourg (1852), a Calvary in bronze for the high altar of St Vincent de Paul (1855), as well as Hebe and the Eagle of Jupiter (Musée des Beaux Arts, Dijon), Love Triumphant and Christ on the Cross, all of which appeared at the Paris Salon of 1857 after his death.
He died in 1855.

On January 5 is the birthday of

Nicolas de Staël (Nikolai Vladimirovich Stael von Holstein, Николай Владимирович Шталь фон Гольштейн), French painter of Russian origin known for his use of a thick impasto and his highly abstract landscape painting. He also worked with collage, illustration and textiles.
De Staël's family was forced to emigrate to Poland in 1919 because of the Russian Revolution; both his father and stepmother died in Poland and the orphaned Nicolas de Staël was sent with his older sister Marina to Brussels to live with a Russian family (1922).
He eventually studied art at the Brussels Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts (1932). In the 1930s, he travelled throughout Europe, lived in Paris (1934) and in Morocco (1936) and Algeria.
In 1936 he had his first exhibition of Byzantine style icons and watercolors at the Galerie Dietrich et Cie, Brussels. He joined the French Foreign Legion in 1939 and was demobilized in 1941.
In 1941, he moved to Nice where he met Jean Arp, Sonia Delaunay and Robert Delaunay, and these artists would inspire his first abstract paintings, or "Compositions". In 1944 he had his first one-man exhibition at the Galerie l'Esquisse.
By 1950 his paintings began to attract attention worldwide and he had a one-man exhibition at the Galerie Jacques Dubourg in Paris and Schempp introduced de Stael's paintings to New York where he had considerable success.
By 1953 de Staël's depression led him to seek isolation in the south of France (eventually in Antibes). He suffered from exhaustion, insomnia and depression. In the wake of a disappointing meeting with a disparaging art critic he committed suicide in 1955.

On January 6 is the birthday of

Joaquin Mir Trinxet, Catalan Spanish artist born in 1873. Living through a turbulent time in the history of his native Barcelona, he was known by the color of his paintings. They helped to define the Catalan art movement known as modernisme.
Mir studied at the Llotja before joining the Colla del Safrà group with Canals, Nonell, and Pichot. In 1899 Mir went to Mallorca with Santiago Rusiñol, where he met the mystic Belgian painter William Degouve de Nuncques, whose work would influence his own. Working in isolated circumstances in Mallorca, Mir painted odd landscapes in which forms and chromatic colors merged. In his first exhibition in Barcelona in 1901, the critical reviews were positive but the public found his paintings difficult to comprehend. He started in Mallorca a solitary artistic process, full of colors without forms, which finished when he suffered an accident in 1905.
In 1913 he returned to more realistic positions, receiving recognition for his work. From this period, his paintings tended to become more mystic, more abstract, and highly colored evocations of nature rather than topographical scenes.
He was one of the rare Spanish painters of the period who did not continue his artistic education in Paris. But he visited regularly Casas and Rusiñol, which lived together at the Moulin de la Galette in Montmartre, along with painter and art critic Miquel Utrillo and the sketch artist Ramon Canudas.
He had not the same influence from the French impressionists as Casas. The style that would become known as modernisme had not yet fully come together, but the key people were beginning to know one another, and successful Catalan artists were increasingly coming to identify themselves with Barcelona as much as with Paris.
He died in 1940.

On January 7 is the birthday of

Robert Litchfield Juniper, Australian artist, art teacher, illustrator, painter, printmaker and sculptor born in 1929.
He studied commercial art and industrial design at Beckenham School of Art, England. After returning to Western Australia he painted, taught and exhibited in Perth. He was particularly championed by Rose Skinner, a local exhibitor. He was a long term resident of Darlington and at different stages in its history involved with the Darlington Arts Festival.
Juniper taught art at Perth College and Hale School in the 1950s, and at Guildford Grammar School in the 1960s. In the 1960s his excursions into the Australian outback with Ian Parkes was the inspiration for the subject matter a large part of his abstract style of art.
He designed the coat of arms for the Commonwealth Law Courts in Perth, in 1992. His works are held in numerous collections, including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Queensland Art Gallery and Parliament House, Canberra
Juniper was given many solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas, including a major retrospective in 1999 at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth.
Juniper was commissioned to work on a feature window in the restored Bunbury Catholic Cathedral- and it was completed in 2011.
He died in 2012.

On January 8 is the birthday of

Pavel Nikolayevich Filonov (Па́вел Никола́евич Фило́нов), Russian avant-garde painter, art theorist, and poet born in 1883 (December 27, 1882, Julian calendar).
In 1897, he moved to St. Petersburg where he took art lessons. In 1908, he entered St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, from which, he was expelled in 1910.
In 1910–1914, he took part in the arts group Soyuz Molodyozhi created by artists Elena Guro and Mikhail Matyushin. In 1912, he wrote the article The Canon and the Law, in which, he formulated the principles of analytical realism, or "anti-Cubism". According to Filonov, Cubism represents objects using elements of their surface geometry but "analytical realists" should represent objects using elements of their inner soul. He was faithful to these principles for the remainder of his life.
During the years 1913 to 1915, Filonov was close to Vladimir Mayakovsky, Velimir Khlebnikov, and other futurists. He co-illustrated Khlebnikov's Selected Poems with Postscript, 1907-1914 alongside Kazimir Malevich during this time. In the autumn of 1916, he enlisted for service in World War I, and served on the Romanian front. Filonov participated actively in the Russian Revolution of 1917 and served as the Chairman of the Revolutionary War Committee of Dunay region.
In 1919, he exhibited in the First Free Exhibit of Artists of All Trends at the Hermitage. In 1923, he became a professor of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and a member of the Institute for Artistic Culture (INKhUK). He organized a large arts school of Masters of Analytical Realism (over seventy artists). Their work influenced suprematism and expressionism.
He died in 1941.

Today, January 9, is the birthday of

Simon Vouet, French painter and draftsman born in 1590, who today is perhaps best remembered for helping to introduce the Italian Baroque style of painting to France.
His father Laurent was a painter in Paris and taught him the rudiments of art. Simon began his painting career as a portrait painter. At a young age he travelled to England and was part of the entourage of the Baron de Sancy, French ambassador to Constantinople. From there he went to Venice and was in Rome in 1614.
He spent an extensive period of time in Italy, from 1613 to 1627. He was mostly in Rome where the Baroque style was emerging during these years. He received a pension from the King of France and his patrons.
He was a natural academic, who absorbed what he saw and studied, and distilled it in his painting: Caravaggio's dramatic lighting; Italian Mannerism; Paolo Veronese's color and di sotto in su or foreshortened perspective; and the art of Carracci, Guercino, Lanfranco and Guido Reni. Vouet's immense success in Rome led to his election as president of the Accademia di San Luca in 1624.
Despite his success in Rome, Vouet suddenly returned to France in 1627.
Vouet's new style was distinctly Italian, importing the Italian Baroque style into France. He adapted this style to the grand decorative scheme of the era of Louis XIII and Richelieu and was made premier peintre du Roi. Louis XIII commissioned portraits, tapestry cartoons and paintings from him for the Palais du Louvre, the Palais du Luxembourg and the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
In Paris, Vouet was the fresh dominating force in French painting, producing numerous public altarpieces and allegorical decors for private patrons.
He died in 1649.
