Julia Fullerton-Batten

«In this series of images, I have posed street-cast young Korean women dressed in the traditional Hanbok against a backdrop of Soul's modern austere architecture. The settings illustrate the country's history, its cultural traditions, and the political tensions between South and North Korea.»

«'A Testament to Love' is a narrative about the struggles of life when love goes wrong. The women in my images wrestle with the eternal search for a happy ending, but find themselves left with feelings of solitude, loneliness, fear, regret and resignation. Are they searching for a meaning to their lives or just waiting for something to happen.»

Julia Fullerton-Batten is a world-wide acclaimed an exhibited fine-art photographer. The foundation of her success was "Teenage Stories" (2005), an evocative narrative of the transition of a teenage girl to womanhood as she grapples with the vulnerability of her teenage predicament- adjustments to a new body, her emotional development and changes in her social standing. Her book "Teenage Stories" was published in 2007.
Fullerton-Batten freely admits to there being a semi-autobiographical element in much of her earlier works. She recounts often falling back on recollections of her own teenage years, living as the family did in Germany, the USA and the UK, her parent's divorce, and her own early relationship. She was born in Germany, her mother in German, her father English, and she and her siblings experienced fully the cultural and temperamental differences of their parents.
Upon her parent's divorce she and her siblings moved to England in 1984, where she completed her education. She then chose photography as a career, and studied at college for two years, after which she assisted professional photographers for five years. A first commercial assignment kickstarted her career as a professional photographer in 1995.

«After Teenage Stories did well in a few competitions, I got approached by an art gallery and once you get approached by one art gallery, you can show your work at Paris Photo and some of the big art shows, like Miami. The ball is rolling then, but it can be a slow process. I would say it's slightly easier starting the other way around; an art photographer trying to get into commercial photography, because agencies today love it if you're passionate about your photography and like to use your personal images in their campaigns. However, there is a higher level of competition between these photographers, and there are many talented people out there.»

«The preparation for a shoot takes quite some time, but on the day of the shoot I am fully prepared to know what and how I am going to shoot a scene. The time for setting up a particular scene may take a few minutes or hours depending on the changes that are needed. In most cases I do very little digital reworking as working digitally enables me to get most aspects of the shot fixed in the camera so that retouching is fairly minimal.»

«Personally, I benefit very much from my involvement in both fine art and commercial photography. I love the fine art photography because it is my creation from start to finish, but I get a great thrill from being involved in a successful commercial shoot. I also find that there is a cross-fertilisation of technical knowledge and creative inspiration from one to the other that benefits my involvement in both genres. Having said that, I quite often have a sense of feeling, and it is only a sense, that collectors of my fine art work would prefer that I were not involved in commercial work. And that art directors think that my involvement with fine art photography would be of detriment to shooting commercials successfully. Having just been selected to shoot the 2015 Campari Calendar, I will certainly have to revise the second prejudice that I may feel, as I think the fact that I am a fine art photographer definitely played a part in me winning the assignment. In the end, I think that my photographic style penetrates through in the final result. The viewer - fine art or the public - will appreciate it for what it is, whether fine art or an advertisement.»

«My earlier work – ‘Teenage Stories, 2005 ‘; ‘In Between, 2009/2010‘; ‘Awkward, 2011‘; Mothers and Daughters, 2012‘ and a ‘Testament to Love, 2013‘ - all contain some element of an auto-biographical nature. Episodes and experiences in my own transition from a pre-pubescent girl to womanhood formed the basis for these projects, ranging from the unease of a young girl to her bodily and emotional changes, right up to the disappointments of unrequited love. It was on occasion very cathartic shooting these projects but I’ve now been able to move on to different themes, especially recently treating social aspects affecting the population at large – ‘Unadorned, 2012’, ‘Blind, 2013’ and ‘In Service, 2014’. The first of these examined present day society’s pre-occupation with the ultra-thin figure using the Old Masters’ appreciation of the fuller figure as a contrast. The second theme involved photographing and interviewing blind people. As a photographer I naturally treasure my sight and I’d frequently wondered what it would be like to lose this, for me, very important one of mankind’s five senses. ‘In Service’ looks at the role and treatment of servants during the Edwardian era in Britain’s history, when exploitation and abuse of the poorer class by the rich was apparently quite widespread.»
