Pablo Emilio Gargallo, pintor y escultor aragonés.

Gargallo developed a style of sculpture based on the creation of three-dimensional objects from pieces of flat metal plate, and he also used paper or cardboard. Some of these sculptures have a form of cubism. He also made more traditional sculptures in bronze, marble and other materials. He is considered to be one of the most significant artists of the Aragonese avant-garde.
He spent a significant part of his life in the Montparnasse Quarter of Paris, France, where in 1903 he lived in the artists commune Le Bateau-Lavoir with Max Jacob, Juan Gris and other artists including his friend Pablo Picasso whose head he modelled as a sculpture.

By that time he was recognized as a leading modern artist known for his peasant scenes, but also for his mystical-religious compositions. His large-scale painting The Last Supper was exhibited at the Salon de Champ-de-Mars in 1896. He also painted portraits for wealthy clients including the British collector George McCulloch. He was one of the first to use the then new medium of photography to bring greater realism to his paintings.

Boris Vallejo, Peruvian painter born in 1941. He emigrated to the United States in 1964, and he currently resides in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He frequently works with Julie Bell, his wife, painter, and model.
Vallejo works almost exclusively in the fantasy and erotica genres. His hyper-representational paintings have graced the covers of dozens of science fiction paperbacks and are featured in a series of best-selling glossy calendars. Subjects of his paintings are typically Sword and sorcery gods, monsters, and well-muscled male and female barbarians engaged in battle. Some of his male figures were modeled by Vallejo himself, and many of his later female characters were modeled by his wife. His latest works still retain heavy fantasy elements, but lean more towards the erotic rather than pure fantasy themes.

Lawrence Alma-Tadema, neoclassical Dutch painter of the Victorian era born in 1836, known for its sumptuous paintings inspired by the ancient world.
His first major success was the painting The Education of Children Clovis (1861), exhibited in Antwerp. The following year, he received his first gold medal in Amsterdam.
In his work abound bright colors delicately crafted that draws an inherent human interest to his archaic scenes elegant and jokingly brought to modern times. He also made several portraits.
Alma-Tadema was knighted in the eighty-first birthday of Queen Victoria, in 1899. He became associate member of the Royal Academy (1876) and member in 1879.
Alma Tadema died in 1912 due to an illness in the stomach leaving a vast collection of paintings and his marbled studio to his two unmarried daughters.

On January 9 is the birthday of

Ian Hornak, American artist, painter and printmaker born in 1944, one of the founding artists of the Hyperrealist and Photorealist art movements.
At age 9 he received a set of oil paints and a book of important Renaissance paintings from his mother as a gift and immediately began copying the works of Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael Sanzio.
Hornak produced Hyperrealist and Photorealist artwork with surreal overtones in the midst of the pop art movement. He was introduced into the New York art scene in 1968 by Pop Artist, Lowell Blair Nesbitt, with whom Hornak lived and worked until 1969. That year, he exhibited in New York and in 1970, at the suggestion of Jackson Pollock and Jason McCoy, signed a contract with Tibor de Nagy Gallery, a relationship that led to his first solo show in 1971.
Hornak died in 2002.

Nicolas Coustou, French sculptor and academic born in 1658.
Coustou was the son of a woodcarver, who gave him his first instruction in art. When he was eighteen years old he moved to Paris, to study under C.A. Coysevox, his maternal uncle, who presided over the recently established Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture; and at the age of twenty-three Coustou won the Colbert prize (the Prix de Rome), which entitled him to four years of education at the French Academy at Rome. He subsequently became rector and chancellor of the Academy of Painting and Sculpture. From 1700, he worked with Coysevox at the palaces of Marly and Versailles.
Influenced by Michelangelo and Algardi, he tried to combine the best characteristics of each.
Regularly, he worked closely with his brother, Guillaume Coustou, also a renowned sculptor and director of the academy. Because of their collaborations, it is not always possible to ascribe a particular work to one or the other, thus one may find a single sculpture ascribed to each of them. His brother's son, Guillaume Coustou the Younger, also was a sculptor.
A number of his works were destroyed during the French Revolution.
He died in Paris in 1733.

Today, January 10, is the birthday of

Dame Jocelyn Barbara Hepwort, prominent British sculptor born in 1903.
She attended the Wakefield Girls High School, and studied at the Leeds School of Art (where he met Moore) between 1920 and 1921, as well as the Royal College of Art in London (1921-1924). Later she studied for a time in Italy.
She belonged to an important group of European artists working traditional materials in innovative ways. Her work is characterized by the hollow spaces inside the sculpture. For her the natural properties of the material should definitely form the work, generally abstract and prevalence of wood and stone.
After World War II she became, along with his colleague Henry Moore in one of the revelations of the most important sculpture of her generation. Over the years her works were reaching larger.
She died in 1975.

Antonio Carnicero, Spanish painter of the Neoclassical style born in 1748. In addition to his paintings, over the course of his career he also produced prints and engravings as well as creating theatrical decorations.
In 1775, Carnicero collaborated with Joseph del Castillo in the execution of tapestry cartoons for the royal household. He also worked as a theatrical decorator for performances at the Teatro de la Cruz and the Teatro del Principe. Between 1780 and 1782, he provided illustrations for a project of the Royal Spanish Academy to prepare a deluxe printing of Don Quixote, edited by Joaquín Ibarra, that became a milestone edition of the Spanish literary classic.
In 1796, Carnicero was named chamber painter for King Charles IV of Spain.
From that point on, he worked mainly as a portraitist of the royal family and leading ministers at court.
As Spain came under Napoleonic rule, beginning in 1809 Carnicero, like Francisco Goya, was required to work for Joseph Bonaparte to maintain his position as court painter. After the restoration of the Bourbons, Carnicero was put on trial for removal from his office on the grounds that he had served the foreign king.
He died in 1814.
