The first appearances in his work of forms that will soon become archetypes of the female body or the human figure occur in the mid-1950s. On September 26 is the birthday of

Jean-Louis André Théodore Géricault, French painter born in 1791. Prototype romantic artist, had a short and troubled life that led to several myths about it.
His first major work, "The Charging Chasseur", exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1812, revealed the influence of the style of Rubens and an interest in the representation of a contemporary issue.
From the beginning of his career he demonstrated qualities that distinguish it clearly from the neoclassical school of painters of Jacques-Louis David; preferred to deal with issues of daily life, raising them to the status of heroic deeds. Showing desperation and suffering of the people, soon happens to be the most representative Romantic painter, but because his independence of style and an indocile nature, Géricault stayed out of the great official commissions, a genre that seduced Delacroix. He died in 1824.

He enrolled first in the National Academy of Design where he studied drawing and painting, and later, at the Art Students League of New York, where his interest in sculpture came to the fore. His ability to capture animals in action, garnered in part from his days tracking them, coupled with his interest in all things Native American, opened a niche for Proctor, one that he parlayed into a long, successful career.
