«There is a phenomenon that Jazz musicians call “Woodshedding” which is when a player retreats from the world of playing gigs and locks himself in a room (or woodshed as the case may be) until he “gets it right”..or has a breakthrough in his skill/creativity level..
Interestingly enough an artistic form of woodshedding is precisely what inspired this piece ; I have consciously been working on getting better as an artist and this piece represents the breakthrough – both in technique and in inspiration…»

Thomas Dodd is an Atlanta based photographer and digital artist whose work blurs the lines between photography and classical art.
He began his career as a visual artist in 2005. Before that, he was best known as the harpist and songwriter for the 1990s musical group Trio Nocturna, a Celtic Gothic ensemble that put out three critically-acclaimed albums ("Morphia", "Tears of Light" and "Songs of the Celtic Night") and
performed at author Anne Rice's annual Halloween balls in New Orleans, as well as spawning an offshoot band called the Changelings. Thomas also played
harp on two albums by Michael Gira (the driving force behind the influential post-punk band the Swans) - "the Body Lovers" and the Angels of Light "New Mother".
The images that Thomas creates are basically a visual equivalent of the music he composed in the 1990s. Mythic themes and their relation to emotions and psychological states continue to be his primary subjects and motivations.

«The one time I portrayed myself as a transformed being, it was as the crucified Christ. This was not only a link to my Catholic upbringing, but my way of showing that the Christ metaphor remains so strong in our culture because all of us have felt the death/rebirth experience many many times in our lives.»

«I am definitely more influenced by painters than photographers. I love Rembrandt and Caravaggio for the way they rendered light and skin tones, Giuseppe Arcimboldo for his fusion of plant and human forms, the Pre-Raphaelites for their depiction of myth and feminine beauty, and perhaps the biggest influence on me is that of the Symbolists, because they perfectly united the metaphoric and the beautiful in their works.»

«I was particulary influenced by the writings of Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, Robert Graves, who all found a correlation between mythology and poetry, and psychology. What it means to be human. That's really what I'm trying to elicit in my work is an emotional reaction, not quite an intellectual one. That's fine when people gets from my work, that's fine if they want to put deeper meaning in there own story onto it, but what is more important to me is that they feel something when they look at the work.»
