Andrew Batcheller

Andrew Batcheller is an American painter from Kansas, with a unique style and a powerful palette. His works draw attention from the first glance. Landscapes, vegetation and animals (usually birds) with very distinctive profiles in beautifully painted compositions often marked by symmetry and incorporating surreal elements.

"The meaning behind the symbols and landscapes in each painting is not immediately decipherable in any of them, but that isn’t important. Everything in Batcheller’s paintings is executed with such sure-handedness, and each piece of the composition fits with the rest of the image so well, that he creates the impression that there is a purpose for everything he paints, whether we understand it or not. Each canvas takes us to a different view of his fantasy realm, and nothing more is required to enjoy the paintings than to take in the swirling organic designs, the precisely crafted animals that inhabit this place, and the expansive colorful landscapes — and wish that they were actually real."

"I find the greatest inspiration in listening to people speak, their stories. From the most tragic to the most enlightened, from the dull to the exciting, they all fascinate me. I love a good story. I've found that even the simplest tale can hold a thousand future paintings. All of my work, without exception, evolve from some such stories or perhaps the person who told it."

"I have to believe I was influenced strongly by the GREAT Thomas Hart Benton... my first exposure to the man was a tour through his former studio, left exactly as it was the day he left it last. I won't rattle on about that day to avoid verifying that I may actually be crazy but it was the closest to a paranormal experience that I've ever had to this day. The deep smell of pipe tobacco and turpentine, the dusty print of his boots on the floor... and the work! But as for my style, it happened without a lot of outside influence. I only spent a year and a half in Art School, self funded by waiting tables... I was too young, broke and confused to learn much... even for Art School, I was very odd!"

"I have always loved birds, the folds of feathers, the eyes, their sounds, and of course their ability to fly. I find every species to hold its own fascination and have to come to realize that each of those species evoke a certain quality unique to itself and can mirror every human emotion. If I get it right, a beak can reflect a smirk or a smile as clearly as a mouth. I also find that the bird in each painting sets the tone and introduces a sense of character, dealing the best it can with the situation I place it in."
