Esta obra monográfica de 1705 se debe al trabajo de la entomóloga holandesa Maria Sybilla Merian. Nacida en 1647 en Frankfurt, fue una naturalista e ilustradora científica que estudió plantas e insectos realizando detallados dibujos entre los que destacan los de metamorfosis de mariposas. Estos trabajos, aún sin el reconocimiento que merecen, prestaron una destacada contribución al desarrollo de la entomología.

This monograph (1705) is the work of the Dutch entomologist Maria Sybilla Merian. Born in 1647 in Frankfurt was a naturalist and scientific illustrator who studied plants and insects made detailed drawings among which the metamorphosis of butterflies. These works, even without the recognition they deserve, paid an outstanding contribution to the development of entomology.

Desde 1691, Merian vivió en Ámsterdam, donde tuvo su primer contacto con las colonias holandesas en Sudamérica y concretamente con Surinam. En 1699 se embarcó desde Amsterdam con su hija en una ardua travesía que la llevaría a Surinam a investigar los insectos y plantas, y cómo sus procesos vitales estaban inextricablemente conectados. Las investigaciones que llevó adelante está reflejada en la obra "Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium", editada en 1705 en dos pequeñas ediciones con 60 grabados en latín y holandés.

Since 1691, Merian lived in Amsterdam, where she had her first contact with the Dutch colonies in South America and particularly with Suriname. In 1699 she sailed from Amsterdam with her daughter in an arduous journey that would take her to Suriname to investigate insects and plants, and how their life processes were inextricably connected. Investigations carried forward is reflected in her work "Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium", published in 1705 in two small issues with 60 prints in Latin and Dutch.

Jerry Duane Ott es un artista realista americano nacido en 1947, que que comenzó a pintar a partir de fotografías mientras aún estaba en la universidad a mediados de los 60. Todavía influenciado por artistas Pop como Larry Rivers, y Richard Lindner, no fue hasta que se introdujo en el trabajo del artista alemán Paul Wunderlich que Ott empezó a trabajar pintando directamente de fotografías. A lo largo de los años 70 y 80 su obra se muestra en grandes exposiciones con un grupo de artistas que iban a ser conocidos como “Fotorrealistas”, mientras que también se exhibe como pintor figurativo. Jerry Duane Ott is an American realist artist born in 1947, began to paint from photographs while still in college in the mid-60s. Still influenced by Pop artists like Larry Rivers and Richard Lindner was not until he was introduced to the work of German artist Paul Wunderlich that he began work painting directly from photographs. Throughout the 70s and 80s his work was shown in major exhibitions with a group of artists who came to be known as "Photorealistics" while also exhibited as a figurative painter. "Cuando comencé a hacer estas pinturas a fines de los '60, representaban una progresión lógica del trabajo relacionado con el Pop Art que venía practicando desde que empecé a pintar. After showing for many years as an early "Photorealist" and a "Figure Painter" in major shows of the period, I became aware that only a small part of my feelings about painting were shared with other "Photorealist" painters; their work being cool and devoid of emotional content while mine tended to lean toward more visceral or emotional issues and conventional figure painting seemed to be time worn and showing it's age. These feelings have never left me and I find myself now involved and reflecting upon the same dilemma, striving to do paintings that excite me and fulfill my needs while enabling me to express my feelings in visual terms.
